(A must-read for patriotic and responsible citizens of a democratic country, India)
What is Surgical Strike?
How it happens?
Why people go crazy over its success?
How a soldier’s risk and sacrifice is transformed into a particular party’s votes?
Why should we respect every soldier?
“Quartered in snow, silent to remain. When the duty calls, they shall rise and march again”.
What is a Surgical Strike?
Surgical Strikes are military operations and missions covertly or secretly undertaken by special armed forces (mainly commandos). They conduct offensive attacks on enemy territories to hit and destroy enemy targets and installations and return to primary positions. The whole mission is conducted with top secrecy, lightning speed and minimal or zero casualty.
How it happens?
When a terrorist attack happens, the local police are the first respond to the call. They try to tackle and detain the culprits in case of terrorist attack such as the attacks of 26/11 Mumbai. They also hail the help of National Security Guards (NSG) Commandos who along with the Anti-Terrorist Squad eliminate the terrorist threat.
When there is a suicide bombing or multiple bomb detonations, the local police keep the public away for safety reasons and handover the situation to the Indian Armed Forces.
The Special Forensic Team of the Armed Forces carefully gathers the evidence and tries to reconstruct the events.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) try to locate the source of the attack and when the situation seems beyond the limits for CBI, the Armed Forces’ Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), the National Intelligence Agency of India comes into action.
RAW plans covert missions, send spies and executives to collect, analyze intelligence, which will give some lead or in some cases it captures the terrorist responsible for the attack.
The convict goes through inquiry procedures which will provide information such as the place from where the attack was planned, the responsible terrorist organization, the path route they use to infiltrate the state, any other attacks planned, etc etc…which are needed for a counter-attack from the Indian Armed Forces.
As these procedures and tasks go on, news channels will publish the details of the attack given by the police, for the knowledge of the public.
The journalists, reporters, news channels, common public will begin to question the ruling politicians regarding the lack of security in the nation and start demanding a quick bold response from the Indian side. The politicians will ensure the public and the press that a response would be definitely made and will rush to the meeting with the Chief of Staff of Army, Navy, Air Force, the Defence Minister, the Home Minister and other important staff. The team will brief the politicians about the attack.
The politician then pressures the Indian Armed Forces and gives them the freedom to strike back at the potential threats.
The politicians don’t know military strategies or techniques. They just give the go ahead signal which is the only thing they can and have to do.
How a strike is planned?
The Armed Forces proceed to choose an Elite Special Force squad which includes the Para SF Commando Force of the Army, the Garud Commando Force of the Air Force, and the Marcos Commando Force of the Navy and gives orders to isolate their teams to prevent potential disclosure of the classified mission.
Each of the soldiers, air warrior, and sailor of the Special Forces have gone through rigorous, brutal training for search and rescue operations, counter-terrorism operations, hostage rescue. They are well trained in Weapon handling, Survival Skills(in all types Snow, Desert, Forest, Swamp regions, etc), Explosives calculation and detonations, Communication, Navigation, Battlefield medical first-aid, Amphibious stealth, Hand to Hand close combat, etc. They are trained to be tough and complete death-defying missions.
The RAW agents go undercover to observe the places such as a potential terrorist training camp, Launch Pads, Bunkers and send back intelligence carrying information about the Coordinates of the location, approx number of terrorists in the area, types of weapons they possess, and various exit and entry points to reach the area.
For further surveillance of the area, the Indian Space Research Organisation ( ISRO) positions certain satellites over the coordinates of the location given by the intelligence and the live telecast is intensely observed by the Armed Forces. The Special Force regiment squad selected for the operation draws up a rough outline sketch of the area, gives their operation a code name, and are given intense training regarding the combat formation that needs to be adopted, close-up assaults, and identification of terrorists. Suitable tactical weapons such as efficient assault rifles, snipers, explosives, machine guns, and sufficient ammunition are chosen and specialized training regarding how to efficiently use the equipment are taken by the chosen Special Force troops.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) provides additional tactical weapons and surveillance drones to aid the mission.
As the day of the strike approaches, the suitable aircraft for the transportation of the soldiers and the closest place near the target area is chosen for the soldiers to drop and for extraction.
In case of any faults or emergency, Air Support is always kept on high alert for the rescue of the soldiers. The Air Support usually consist of Transport helicopters accompanied by combat fighter jets.
Usually, the strikes are done at night because of the advantage of dark cover for stealthy operations.
The politicians are informed by the Armed Forces that they are ready to strike and not many details about the training, equipment, targets are discussed.
During the strike
After the troops are dropped, they stealthily rush through dense forests, mountainous terrains risking of being spotted by enemies, attacked by wild animals etc. They only depend upon their camouflage dress, the cover of darkness, their stealthy movement and the intelligence provided to them about the area.
As the troops near their target, they break into 2 to 3 groups surrounding the target and installing snipers at the high outer areas for taking down enemies from long range, plant explosives to detonate them to break into walls and obstacles, position tactical weapons like the rocket launcher, grenade launcher and assault rifle troops to enter the building eliminating any threat that comes in the way.
Once the strike is successfully accomplished with no Indian casualties. The troops rush back to their extraction point and they are airlifted back to safety.
What happens after the strike?
The Armed Forces observe and confirm the same and will give out a decent report to the press for the public knowledge about the strike that had been performed on the terrorist camps. We must note that not all surgical strikes or offensive missions are revealed to the people as they are considered not yet declassified. If there is no news of surgical strike, it doesn’t mean one has not occurred. Only minor details of the declassified missions are revealed to the public.
As the news channels and newspapers across India begin to flash the news of the counter-strike, the people across the nation begin to rejoice with happiness and patriotism from having avenged the fallen.
How the politicians exploit soldiers sacrifice and win votes?
The news comes trending in social media and popularised politicians will come in front of the camera to wave their hand and speak about the brave step the political party took to eliminate the threats. The political leader gets the credit for the sacrifice, bloodshed, and bravery of the soldiers who have been ordered to keep their identities and the information of their mission a secret.
The politicians will give big long speeches about how brave and strong their leader is to take such bold actions and call for the voters to vote for their political party in the coming elections. Politicians continue to live their luxury life and the people will do the propaganda and campaigns of their favorite party through social media and continue to give the credits and appreciations to the politicians and vote for them.
What the Soldiers care about?
The soldiers have always wanted this kind of opportunity to avenge the threats of India, to serve their motherland with bravery and sacrifice as they have been trained for these types of operations. They know the risks of the job. They know that no bulletproof vest can stop a bullet fired in close range or fired from a assault rifle (the ones shown in the movies are fake) but have opted to take up the job for the sake of their nation, their motherland India and the sense of patriotism they have in their brave hearts.
Before the strike, the soldiers recall their families and the life which they pledged for their country. They very well know how to laugh at the face of death and escape from it because it is what they have been training to do.
After the missions the soldiers will return to their normal lives, doing their duty in their section or offices, dropping their kids to school, waiting in long ques and crowds to buy vegetables and groceries, teaching their children, help their wives, etc and when they see the news of the surgical strike they had carried out in the televisions and newspapers they just smile with satisfaction that they had served their country and wait for another call for another mission hoping they would not die on that other mission as well and continue their service and protect our country.
The soldiers don’t do their services for the favor of political parties, they do their services for the nation. They are not workers of the party, they are soldiers of a country. They don’t care about which political party rules the country, they just care about the threats to the nation and work to wipe them out.
As a citizen, you must be aware of this.
Don’t play politics with the heroic deeds and sacrifices of the brave Armed Forces of India.
