GIVE WITHOUT BOUNDS – The Story of Narayanan Krishnan – Akshaya Trust

3 minutes

Food, shelter, and clothing are called the three basic needs of man. We all know that being deprived of clothing and shelter never leads one to death. But not food. It is the only thing that determines life in all living beings, including us. While one half of the world takes food for granted and wastes it in tons, the other half is still dreaming of having a good meal in their lifetime.

For you and me, food is just another easily available commodity. But for millions of people, it is an unimaginable luxury. Feeding such people is not just giving them food, it’s giving them life.

There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread ― Mahatma Gandhi

Have you watched the Malayalam movie ‘Ustad hotel’

Do you know that the story of a real hero is shown in a little part of this movie?

Yeah. It is the story of Mr. Narayanan Krishnan, founder of Akshaya trust in Madurai

Why is he a hero?

What is so inspiring about him? Let me say his story.

Born in the city of Madurai in a privileged upper-caste family, Narayanan Krishnan was a normal Indian till 2002. He studied catering and worked as a chef in the Taj hotel, Bangalore. He was selected for an elite job in Switzerland. Before going to Europe, he went back to his hometown, Madurai.

On his way, he coincidentally saw a mentally ill person, dying of hunger and having nothing to eat, was trying to eat his own human waste. Shocked by seeing this, he immediately got out of the car and bought him food to eat.

This very moment changed his life. Working in a five-star hotel, where people eat for happiness and luxury, he was satisfying his customers with good cuisine, whereas in the same country, some are left uncared and unfed, dying of hunger.

The incident disturbed him a lot that he resigned his job, returned to his hometown Madurai and devoted his life for the welfare of the uncared people. He put in all his savings and started his work of feeding those in hunger. Today, the Akshaya trust started by him is striving hard towards this mission.

Narayanan Krishnan

Narayanan Krishnan’s day starts at 4 am. He, with his team, cooks food for all helpless people on the streets of Madurai. He gives food to all these people and even feeds them. Adding to it, he takes a scissor and a blade to groom those people and baths them.

It is a reminder to all those that they are also humans deserving love and there are fellow humans in this world to still take care of them.

In his words, “food is one part. Love is another part. Food gives them physical nutrition. The love and affection which you show will give them mental nutrition.” Till date, he has fed 19,00,000 such people.

Now he has built a home for the destitute in Madurai. He was selected as one of the top 10 in the ‘CNN heroes’ list in 2010.

His service continues till date and has inspired a lot of people. Giving to people who don’t even know their needs is the best form of service

No person can help everyone, but everyone can help someone in need

We all possess the never-ceasing treasure that we can give anyone – love and empathy, that the world is ever in need of. Your simple smile can instill great hope and make someone live a little happier; a little longer.

Kindness is a wonderful way to let another struggling soul know that there is still love in this world.

Give it with all your heart, you won’t feel like giving it away; you will feel like, you still have it with you.
